Thursday Morning Headlines 06/07/12

Strong winds on Wednesday afternoon tore a roof section off a Fort Worth apartment complex. No one was injured at the Wayside Plaza apartments, but some residents were displaced. Inspectors are still assessing damage to the two-story apartment complex on Ninth Avenue. Meantime, strong thunderstorms caused power outages for thousands and prompted officials to divert 65 flights at D/FW Airport. 

Less than 24 hours after being shot in the head during a standoff, a member of the Arlington SWAT team was released from the hospital. Officer Bryan Graham greeted a steady stream of hospital visitors on Wednesday. The suspect in the standoff, 23-year-old Alexzander Coan died of his injuries. Coan's girlfriend who was in the apartment at the time, was arrested Wednesday on aggravated kidnapping charges. Police say the two were holding another woman against her will. 

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is in Afghanistan, taking stock of progress in the war and talking with U.S. commanders and Afghan leaders about plans to pull U.S. combat troops out of the country. Panetta acknowledged increasing violence in the southern part of Afghanistan. However he insists the overall level of violence is down.

Defense attorneys for the soldier accused of leaking thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks are expected to start calling witnesses today when they return to a military court at Fort Meade, Maryland. Private First Class Bradley Manning faces charges of aiding the enemy and wrongfully causing intelligence to be published.

The jury is in place for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse trial. Four more jurors were chosen yesterday, filling out the 12-member panel for the high-profile trial. Four alternates were also selected. Sandusky is a former Penn State assistant football coach who faces more than 50 counts of child sexual abuse.  

Investors will be hoping for a repeat of Wall Street's big day yesterday when the markets open this morning. Stocks posted some of their biggest single-day gains of the year on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrials Average surged 287 points closing the day at 12-thousand-415 putting it back into positive territory for the year.
